The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) is pleased to announce that Mr. Leighton McKnight, CD, FCA, FCCA, has been selected as the 2017 ICAJ Distinguished Member Awardee. The prestigious award is presented annually to a member of ICAJ who has contributed, through his/her outstanding achievements, to the prestige and status of the Institute and the Accountancy profession. Mr. McKnight is the local Territory Leader in the firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
He has over 30 years’ experience in auditing and financial consulting and has managed numerous technical financial engagements such as statutory financial audits, management audits and special financial and compliance audits in a wide range of industries. A Fellow of the ICAJ and the Association Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Mr. McKnight served as President of the ICAJ from 2005 to 2007.
He has served on numerous Committees, as Chairman of both ICAJ’s Audit Practice and Membership Committees and as a member of the Bye-Laws, Finance, Admission, Student Affairs and Future of the Profession Committees.
During his presidency, he established collaborative relationships with the Association of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) of the USA. Mr. McKnight served as Director/Secretary at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean (ICAC) from 2005 to 2009 and was Jamaica’s representative at the ACCA International Assembly from 2009 to 2014.
A major initiative of Mr. McKnight has been to assist public sector bodies to improve accountability through the strengthening of corporate governance structures. He has served on the Boards of a number of public entities and is currently the Chairman of the Government of Jamaica Audit Commission, Chairman of the Independent Judiciary Commission and a member of the Parliamentary Integrity Commission.
Mr. McKnight has given yeoman service to the local and regional community in various capacities. A member of the Kiwanis International movement, he is a Distinguished Past President of the Kiwanis Club of North St. Andrew and also a Distinguished Lieutenant Governor of Excellence. He has executed numerous service projects for the less fortunate and has mentored and assisted financially with the education of several needy children. He has also provided audit services to, and served on the Boards of many charitable organizations.
A graduate of Cornwall College, he holds a BSc Degree (Honours) from the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona. The recipient of several awards and accolades, in 2013, he was accorded the Order of Distinction, Commander Class (CD) by the Government of Jamaica in recognition of his distinguished contribution over the years to Public Service, Philanthropy and Community Service.
Mr. McKnight will be presented with the ICAJ Distinguished Member Award at the Institute’s Annual Awards Banquet which will be held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Thursday, December 7, 2017.
