The ICAJ, in collaboration with ACCA,
honoured 146 graduates of the Joint Examination Scheme in pomp and
fanfare at a Graduation and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 10.
The ceremony was held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
The graduates were recognised for
their achievements in the December 2002 and June 2003 sittings of
the ICAJ/ACCA Joint Scheme Examination. ICAJ awards were presented
to students who were hailed as "the best of the best" for
their outstanding performance at various levels of the Joint Scheme
examination.
The Part 1 Examination awardee, who
successfully completed three subjects at the first attempt with the
highest average of those who sat the examination, was Denise
Lorraine Roye, a Storekeeper at Churches Teachers College.
Fiona Nicole Reid, Senior Accountant
at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Omar Leighton Grey, Senior Staff
Accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, were the recipients of the
Part 3 Examination award for December 2002 and June 2003
respectively. Both students attained the highest average of those
completing Part 3 of the ICAJ/ACCA Joint Scheme exam. A consolation
prize was awarded to Kedisha Freckleton, June 2003 graduate, who
also attained the same average score as the Part 3 awardee but
failed a subject at the first sitting of the Part 3 examination.
The ICAJ Bursary was awarded to
24-year-old Kirk Williams, who will be sitting Part 2 of the ICAJ/ACCA
Joint Scheme exam in December 2003.
Jodi Audi-Gayle Gager, June 2003
graduate and an Accountant at KPMG was the recipient of the Sushil
Jain award, presented each year to the youngest graduate completing
the final stage of the examination on the first attempt.
The Jasper Burnett award which is
given to the Jamaican candidate who obtains the highest pass mark in
paper 3.5 - Strategic Business Planning Development, was presented
to Michelle Swaby, Auditor at Deloitte & Touche for December
2002 and Tawana Shaune Gray, Financial Analyst at the Ministry of
Local Government for June 2003.
Recipients of the Deloitte and Touche
Award for December 2002 and June 2003 respectively were Tricia
Brown-Rowe, Senior Auditor at the National Housing Development
Corporation and Tawana Shaune Gray.
Guest speaker, Miss Sandra Shirley,
Research Fellow at the Mona Institute of Business, UWI congratulated
the graduates for rising to the challenge of the examinations and
proving their competence by successfully completing the requirements
of the ICAJ/ACCA professional exams. She told the graduates that
they were now poised for new challenges ahead.
She, however, cautioned that the
future of the accountancy profession rests with them as graduates.
"Together with the more experienced members of this profession,
you must continue to hold the ideals for which your profession
stands, that is, integrity, honesty, objectivity, probity,
confidentiality and free of conflict of interest not only in
appearance but in fact," Miss Shirley stated.
In her response on behalf of the
graduates', Michelle Swaby, noted that while the completion of the
examinations was a tremendous achievement, the graduates should
recognize that it marked the beginning of many more challenges.
"The discipline we have
acquired, the dedication and diligence that we have demonstrated
during our preparation, must now be applied as we take on new
challenges. Let us therefore, as the theme proclaims - rise to the
challenge," she added.
