CAT Graduates Lauded For Their Achievement
Graduates
of the 2005 Certified Accounting
Technician (CAT) programme were lauded for
their achievement during a Joint ICAJ/ACCA
graduation ceremony, held at the Knutsford
Court Hotel on August 30, 2006 to honour
the 170 graduates who successfully
completed the June and December 2005 CAT
examinations.
In his
keynote address, ICAJ member and Managing
Director of the National Housing Trust,
Earl Samuels CD, congratulated the
graduates for their perseverance in
completing the CAT programme in spite of
the various challenges they may have
experienced during the process.
He urged
the graduates not to compromise their
professionalism but to ensure that their
foundation is built on integrity.
"As
accountants, you are not only expected to
be responsible for the accounts in an
organization, you are an important member
of the management team and the quality of
your work and the quality of your input in
the decisions made by the organization can
determine the success or failure of the
organization, so you have onerous
responsibilities," he warned.
Noting that
the Accountancy profession fosters
discipline and provides the foundation for
advancement in any sphere of life, he
encouraged the graduates to pursue further
training and professional development, as
it was critical to their excelling in the
field of Accountancy.
Esther Le
Gendre, Head of Corporate Development for
ACCA Caribbean, during her address to
graduates, stated that developments within
the Accountancy profession globally
presented challenges, as well as
opportunities, for professional
accountants.
"There
has never been a better time to be a newly
qualified Accounting Technician in the
region. Your skills are in demand and the
rewards can be great," she said.
She,
however, warned that with the spotlight on
the profession globally, they must ensure
that, as professional accountants, they
serve not only the interest of their
employers and clients but also in the
interest of the public.
