ICAJ Contributes to Jamaica's Education System

In an effort to contribute to the development of Jamaica’s education system, the ICAJ has embarked on a national outreach project in collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Youth and the Management Institute for National Development (MIND).

Over 100 ICAJ members have already volunteered for the project, which involves members of the accountancy profession volunteering their time and expertise to serve on school boards and to train school bursars islandwide.

The programme was officially announced at a Media Appreciation and Briefing Breakfast hosted by the ICAJ on April 25, 2006 at the Knutsford Court Hotel.

ICAJ President, Leighton McKnight in his address to members of the media and other guests, stated that under the Ministry’s Education Transformation Project, the Institute will be helping to enhance the development of the education system through the contribution of members who will volunteer their time and expertise to serve on school boards and to train school Bursars.

“The project is a means by which the Accountancy profession is helping to meet the need for accountancy skills on the boards of educational institutions and to make a contribution to national development,” he added.

Deputy Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education & Youth, Mr. Jasper Lawrence, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Maria Jones, congratulated the ICAJ for its commitment to the development of Jamaica’s education system.

He noted that over the past few years there has been outcry from various sectors of the society about the quality of education and analysis that have been done have indicated a need to improve the education system to make it consistent with international standards. This process of improvement is being carried out under the Ministry of Education’s Transformation Project.

“Your commitment to contribute to the development of the education sector through the training of bursars and by providing guidance in the financial management of school boards is extremely critical to the Ministry of Education’s Transformation Project,” Mr. Lawrence added.

During the Media Breakfast, certificates and awards were presented to members of the media and to media entities in acknowledgement of your support through coverage and publicity of ICAJ activities over the years.
