Accountants
Urged To Demonstrate A Commitment To Unchallenged Integrity
Members of the local accountancy
profession have been urged to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to
high ethical standards and unchallenged integrity by President of
the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ), Mr. Linroy
Marshall.
Speaking at the Institute's 39th
Anniversary Luncheon held at the Wexford Court Hotel, Montego Bay on
January 21, Mr. Marshall noted that the accountancy profession,
locally and internationally, has experienced increasing pressure and
greater scrutiny as a result of corporate failures such as Enron and
Worldcom in the United States, due largely to poor corporate
policies and business practices.
"As we continue to anticipate
challenges posed by the increasing focus on government regulation of
the accountancy profession and a movement away from self-regulation
globally, members of the profession must demonstrate a commitment to
unchallenged integrity," he said.
Keynote speaker at the luncheon was
Mr. Godfrey Dyer, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist
Association (JHTA). He called upon the profession to use its
influence to assist the JHTA in its lobbying for the introduction of
casino gambling to the resort areas. This, he said would facilitate
the promotion of Jamaica as a signature tourism destination thereby
attracting more tourist arrivals to the island.
The Luncheon was attended by ICAJ
members in Montego Bay and its environs and their clients, members
of the business community and the media.
